Traffic Cones: Height, Visibility and Usage

A traffic cone is a conical visual warning device, primarily used in outdoor or industrial environments to temporarily signal an area to avoid. Color standards (orange-red with white reflective bands) are harmonized across Europe.

Height Selection

  • 30 cm: proximity marking, indoor use (wet floors, temporary obstacles).
  • 50 cm: versatile standard (parking lots, indoor construction, events).
  • 75 cm: long-distance visibility (outdoor construction, roadwork).
  • 100 cm: highway and road use, recommended for public roadways.

Technical Specifications

  • Weighting: solid base or fillable with water/sand. A 50 cm cone should weigh 2-3 kg minimum to resist wind.
  • Reflective bands: EN 12899-1 standard for road use. 1 band on 50 cm models, 2 on 75-100 cm models.
  • Material: flexible PVC (vehicle impact resistant) or polyethylene (more rigid, more economical).
  • Stackable: all professional cones stack vertically for storage.

Combination with Other Devices

For extended marking over several meters, combine cones with barrier tape stretched from cone to cone. For permanent marking, prefer chain posts over cones (superior durability, polished appearance).
