Wavy Barrier Post Strap: Causes, Solutions and Prevention

Is your guidance post belt warped, wavy, or no longer retracting properly? Before replacing everything, here's the complete diagnosis: causes, solutions by severity level, and prevention so it doesn't happen again.

Diagnosis: 3 main causes

Cause 1: Prolonged moisture

Cause 2: Over-winding / jammed mechanism

The belt was pulled beyond its intended length, deforming the return spring. Or the internal mechanism is jammed with dust, creating jerky retraction and creasing the belt when retracting.

Cause 3: UV and aging

A belt exposed to UV for months loses its flexibility. The textile becomes brittle and retains permanent creases. Visible by faded color and abnormal stiffness.

Solutions by severity level

Light level (warped but flexible)

24-hour flat drying + gentle ironing 110°C on reverse side. 48-hour rest under tension. Cost: €0.

Medium level (warped + hard mechanism)

Mechanism disassembly: cleaning with dry air spray, silicone lubrication (never mineral oil which attracts dust). If spring is loose, replace complete mechanism. Cost: €25-40.

Severe level (brittle or broken belt)

Long-term prevention

• Store indoors in dry conditions, belt partially extended
• Clean belt twice a year (damp cloth + mild soap)
• Lubricate mechanism every 12 months (silicone only)
