Belt stanchions: buying guide
The retractable belt barrier stands out with its retractable belt (2 to 5 m depending on model), its standardized height (between 90 and 100 cm to remain visible without obstruction) and its base which determines its use: mobile, fixed or removable.
The four main types of mounting
- Mobile (weighted base) — movable at will, ideal for variable uses (retail stores, events). Round or square base, 8 to 14 kg.
- Permanent installation — permanent installation in concrete slab, for permanent areas (parking lots, reception areas, courtyards).
- Bolt-down — fixing by bolted plate, removable. Compromise between mobile and permanent.
- Magnetic on base — adheres to ferrous surfaces (industrial floors, metal plates) without drilling.
Technical criteria
- Belt length: 2 m is sufficient for a counter, 3 m for a queue corridor, 4 to 5 m for wide areas.
- Retraction tension: too strong retraction fatigues the mechanism long-term; too weak retraction leaves the belt hanging. Professional models offer constant tension over 2000+ cycles.
- Post material: injected ABS (economical, indoor), chrome steel (premium standard), 304 stainless steel (outdoor, food industry), anodized aluminum (lightweight, designer).
- Connection: 4-way heads allowing connection of up to four belts in crossing configuration, essential for complex layouts.
Belt width and finish
Standard 50 mm width (comfortable reading of a message), 35 mm for minimalist environments. Finishes: solid color, alternating stripes (high visibility), logo printed. For premium or heritage environments, consider rope stanchions.
